Sometimes in sports, a team's high scoring offense can overshadow its defense, regardless of the strength of that defense. In the case of Garden City's field hockey team, who has outscored it's opponents 52-3 this season, that is not far from the truth. Alexandra Bruno and Jenna Fuchs are currently in Nassau's top ten for total points and Catherine McTiernan contributes regularly with assists. Garden City currently sits at the top of its conference with an overall 10-0-1 record. But as the season continues, and the Trojans get ready for a run in the playoffs, it's only reasonable to think that the competition will get better and the GC defense will be looking to make a name for itself. After all, how does the saying go?..."offense wins games, defense wins championships." If the game against the Cold Spring Harbor Seahawks last Friday afternoon was any indication of the capabilities of the GC defense, then that defense is well on its way to some much deserved recognition. The Seahawks are one of a few teams who have recently given the Trojans some competition. Both teams met in last year's Nassau County semifinal with Garden City coming away with a 2-1 victory. In September the teams played to a 1-1 tie so the game on October 14th gave the Seahawks reason to think they could beat one of the county's most dominant teams. GC senior defenders Catherine Dickinson, Gabby Giannone and Kathryn Montgomery, along with Katie Trimmer, Liz Kane and goalkeeper Laura Fanning, thought otherwise. The girls knew they would have their work cut out for themselves but they also knew that stopping the Seahawks would be an important step in setting the tone for a successful playoff run. CSH's Victoria Kotowski had come through for the Seahawks many times this season, scoring last minute, game winning goals but Dickinson, Giannone, Montgomery & Co. weren't about to let that happen. Despite many runs into Garden City territory the GC defenders didn't allow Kotowski to even get close enough to take a shot on Fanning. The Trojans offense did its job from the start of the game. Catherine McTiernan opened the scoring with an assist from Jenna Fuchs. Alex Bruno would score two goals to give GC a 3-0 first half lead. Charlotte Castronovo's two second half goals would seal the deal, giving the Trojans a 5-0 lead before the game was called due to lightning. With this team, the Trojans can have the confidence to know that they can win games and championships with their offense AND their defense.
