Story:
by Michael Sparacino Early regular season games are not necessarily a harbinger of whether or not championships will eventually be won (see New York Football Giants: 2011/12 season), but the Trojans’ first two matchups against middling opponents indicate that some work needs to be done if they are going to contend. The issue is inconsistent play, particularly in the areas of pitching and defense. “Oh, those bases on balls,” to borrow the trademark phrase of the Fordham Flash, Frankie Frisch, as lack of control bedeviled several GC pitchers at various points during the two games. Untimely defensive misplays did not help, resulting in the Trojans finding themselves battling uphill against early deficits in both games. On the other hand, hitting has been a positive, allowing the team to mount late comeback rallies in both games. In Game 1 against Lawrence, juniors Joe Gulmi (two hits) and Cory Fallon (two RBIs) had the big blows, and the senior Dans (Muller and Sparacino), along with junior T.J. Pallan, each chipped in with key doubles, leading to a 7-5 victory. Pete Alford salvaged the pitching effort, picking up the win in relief, aided by a sparkling Lattanzio to Sparacino to Pallan double play that shut down a late Lawrence bid. In Game 2 against South Side, the Trojans fell behind 6-1 while facing the South Side staff ace, a hard-throwing UConn-bound lefty. To its credit the team fought back in the sixth, closing the gap to 6-4, thanks to the continued hot hitting of Pallan and a clutch double by sophomore Thomas Zwicke. Unfortunately, pitching and defense failed the Trojans again in the top of the seventh, allowing South Side to score two additional insurance runs, so that GC’s final attempt at a comeback in the home seventh was doomed to fall short in the 8-5 defeat. The team takes to the road for its next two league games against Bethpage and Glen Cove before embarking on its annual trip to Virginia and other points south during spring break week. The toughest part of the schedule awaits their return, and the hope is that by then the battle-tested Trojans will be ready to begin their march to the post-season.
