by Michael Sparacino-The Trojans got right back to business following their week-long baseball-filled sojourn in southern Virginia and North Carolina, facing an always-tough adversary, Levittown Division, in front of Division’s loud and sometimes hostile home crowd. The result was perhaps the squad’s best game of the season to date, a complete team effort that led to a 6-2 victory. Kyle Ritchie reinforced his status as staff ace with a gutty performance, as he repeatedly made big pitches to thwart Division scoring threats. In the sixth, when the Blue Dragons pushed across their only two runs of the game, Ritchie, running on fumes at this point, capped off his effort with an inning-ending strikeout, stranding the bases loaded. Sophomore Nick Sampogne closed out the game in the seventh, finishing up with two strikeouts of his own. Offensively, Rich D’Angelo was the star. Following a Matt Packman double leading off the top of the second, D’Angelo started off the scoring with a two-run home run blast, and then later added a single and double. T.J. Pallan had two hits, including a seventh- inning RBI double to pad the Trojans’ lead. Matteo Lattanzio and Andrew Lobasso also contributed RBI singles. The one down note for the Trojans was that centerfielder and leadoff hitter Dan Muller aggravated a hamstring injury during the game. His status is day-to-day though the only sure cure for a hamstring pull is extended rest, a luxury the Trojans can little afford as the schedule only gets more difficult from here. Still, even without Muller in the starting lineup, the GCHS Nine didn’t miss a beat the following afternoon against Hewlett. Starting pitcher Greg Lingaas twirled a gem, allowing two hits in six shutout innings with five strikeouts. Dan Sparacino (3 hits, 4 RBIs), Cory Fallon (3 hits, 2 RBIs), and Rich D’Angelo and P.J. Volz (2 hits apiece) led the offense, resulting in a 14-2 final score. With two more games left in this four games in four days stretch the pressure is on the Trojans to maintain their winning ways in order to keep pace with their conference foes. Following a 2 PM non-league matchup against Oceanside on Saturday, April 21st at home, the tough in- conference portion of the schedule begins with a three game series against New Hyde Park. The first and third games are at New Hyde Park on Monday, April 23rd and Thursday, April 26th, with GC hosting the middle game of the series on Tuesday, April 24th. All games have a 4:30 start time.
