Cloudy skies and a chance of rain couldnt prevent the Garden City Trojans alumni baseball game from being held on the baseball field at Garden City High School last Saturday afternoon. More than 40 players spanning veteran Coach Rich
Smiths 40 year career (1973-2012) were on hand to renew friendships and play the game they love.
Our alumni came to play, said Coach Smith. It was a very competitive game and these guys can still play. Aided by his long-time assistants Charlie Menges and Mike Sweeney (a former Trojan pitcher), Smith divided the players into odd and even graduating year teams. The even year squad won, 9-6.
It took quite an effort to make this game happen. Past rosters were gathered and word was spread among former players. Members of the 2013 team were on hand to help out with many of the game day details. They included Dave Butler,
Jack OBrien, Nick Sampogne, Steven Wald, Cory Fallon, Ryan Giacini, Tom Zwicke,
P.J. Volz, Matteo Lattanzio, Andrew LoBasso, Brian LoRusso and John Cauchi. In addition, the school grounds crew helped the coaches prepare the field after the previous days heavy rain.
Some of the alumni players were with Coach Smith in the early years such as Frank Kiernan 73 and Bob LaRocca 73. The field is named in honor of Franks late dad, who played such an important role with the program for decades. Others had
made important contributions in the past such as Alex Anthony Sioukis 90, the current New York Mets game day public address announcer, who lent his expertise and a little play-by-play on the P.A. and sound system donated and installed on the
field last year by Joe Ingegno 76 owner of Garden City Security and Alarm.
The Grey (odd years) team consisted of Bob LaRocca 73, Frank Kiernan 73, Bill Harrison 75, Brian Ridgway 77, John Lipuma 85, Jay Pappas 87, Rich Marooney 87, Rob Schauf 91, Terence Olcott 91, Greg Genova 97, Pat Carney 07,
Rob Finneran 07 (who was recently drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays and was there to lend moral support), Matt Emmert 07, Ryan Sweeney 07, Michael Regan 09 and Denis Rice 09.
Playing for the Maroon team (even years) were Phil Geary 74, Joe Syage 74, Joe Ingegno 76, Kevin Sweeney 78, Ken Melkonian 84, Ron Benevento 90, Chris Seitz 90, Alex Sioukas 90, Mike Harrington 96, Chris Manna 96, Mike Volpe 96, Matt Hesterberg 98, Paul Wiebke 98, John Maloney 00, Mike Carney 00, Sal Genova 00,
Mike Salata 00, Mike Scarola 04, Erik Lucas 04, Joe Cesarini 06, Brian Finneran 06, Tom DAntonio 06, Matt Mahony 06, Matt Petiton 06 and Colin Ridgway 08.
After the game, Coach Smith remarked, The entire day far exceeded my expectations. It was very heartwarming to see so many former players that I have not seen in years. Their love of the game, the laughs, their bonding with each other sharing memories, and the fierce competitiveness of the nine inning game made for a perfect day. They were already talking about next years alumni game.
