Story:
TROJANS CRUSH CAREY BEFORE 2,500 AT HOMECOMING, GC HOSTS MACARTHUR IN PLAYOFFS FRIDAY by Jake White Early in the opening period of last Saturday's Homecoming football game, Carey quarterback T.J. Humrich hit wide-open receiver John Chilleli with a 41 yard touchdown pass to put the Seahawks ahead of Garden City, 7-0. The large visiting contingent among the crowd of 2,500 at Warren King Field sensed history. Carey had never beaten the Trojans in ten previous meetings since 1982 and that fact was a major rallying cry at Carey leading up to the showdown between the leagues's top two teams. But today would be different! It wasn't. After giving up that first touchdown, the Trojans scored 38 consecutive points and went on to win, 38-14. By the time the Seahawks scored their second touchdown in the fourth quarter most of the Carey fans who had screamed for an upset had left. Garden City completed a 7 and 0 regular season and clinched the regular season championship. It marked the 17th time that the Trojans enjoyed an unbeaten regular campaign. The win earned Garden City a quarterfinal playoff rematch with MacArthur (3-4) a surprise 13-12 winner over Elmont. The teams will meet Friday afternoon at 2p.m. at Warren King Field. The Trojans won the first meeting, 44-0, on October 1. Chris Ciquera was the offensive standout against Carey, gaining 115 yards on just nine carries and scoring two touchdowns on runs of 49 and 19 yards. Justin Lynch, playing only half the game like the rest of the starters, scored three touchdowns to raise his season total to 14. Steve Carroll completed 5 of 9 passes for 49 yards to set up two of the touchdowns. Dillon Dwyer booted five extra points and a 20 yard field goal, his record-tying fifth of the season. While the offensive line and defense continued its excellent play, there is the feeling that this is an exceptionally good Garden City team without highly-publicized stars. Call it blue collar, call it whatever you like, these 44 players have played like winners. There won't be a Thorp Award Winner or a Martone Award or Piner Award winner either. But there just might be a Rutgers Cup. EXTRA POINTS: GC maintained its number one ranking among New York State's Class A teams...Justin Lynch is four TD's short of the GC one season record shared by Peter Murphy (1992) and John Maloney (1998)...The Men's Association gave away $38,000 at halftime in their annual raffle. Proceeds come back to the school through various grants.....Brian Leistman intercepted two passes, giving him five for the season...Carey's fourth quarter TD was the first yielded in the second half all season. GC has outscored foes 174-27 in the first half and 107-7 after the intermission....The JV beat Carey, 35-0, to go to 7-0 (and 31-0 over four years). Coach Doc Dougherty is trying to arrange a game with Sewanhaka's undefeated JV for Saturday morning at 9:30 at Sewanhaka....Huge tackle Nick Mancusi is getting rave reviews along with defensive specialists Sean Locurto, Colin Plass, Chris Breslin and Corey Garvey....Tough luck that Gavin Brennan's first varsity TD was negated by a penalty...Brian Mullooly had 22 yards on 3 carries....Can you name the fall seasons (not classes) in which GC went undefeated in regular season play? Here they are: 1940, 1944, 1954, 1956, 1982, 1984, 1986, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1998, 2000, 2003, 2004, and 2005. Eleven of those teams were coached by Tom Flatley
