Brian Fischer scores winning goal as Garden City Trojans defeat Niskayuna Warriors 5-4 in NY state boys lacrosse semifinal

New York State semifinal boys lacrosse game between the Section 8 Garden City Trojans and the Section 2 Niskayuna Warriors on Thursday afternoon June 10th at Hofstra's Shuart Stadium. It was a close game all the way that saw the Trojans trailing 2-1 at halftime but halfway through the third quarter GC's Tom Gordon scored twice in 47 seconds, both times on feeds from behind the net by sophomore Devin Dwyer. An unassisted goal by Matt Montgomery made it 4-2. Niskayuna fought back and tied it again with unassisted goals by Mark Panneton and Matt Sexton. The Garden City defense had done a terrific job of keeping the Warriors in check as Niskayuna managed only nine shots on goalie Alex Castronovo but with 8:58 left in the fourth, the defense made yet another great move. GC's Connor Horl won the faceoff after the Warriors scored their fourth goal. He flipped the ball to defenseman Brian Fischer who saw an open lane and took it the rest of the length of the field and fired. His shot hit the back of the net giving the Trojans a 5-4 lead. Niskayuna still had over eight minutes left to try and tie the game and they almost did. With 1:22 left. Sexton got open on the outside and fired a low shot but Castronovo made an incredible save and preserved the win for the Trojans who advanced to the state final game.
