Story:
As the opening act for the 122nd playing of the Wood Stick Classic, the boys JV lacrosse teams of Garden City and Manhasset took the field on Saturday morning May 5th at Garden City High School's Warren King Field. The Trojans were looking for retribution after last year's loss to the Indians and hoped to keep their 2012 undefeated streak alive. From the opening faceoff, it appeared that this was going to be a close game that either team could win. The Indians struck first but only held the 1-0 lead for a little over a minute as GC's Kyle Brattan, off an assist from Connor McCullough, evened the score. McCulllough, off an assist from Liam Byrnes put the Trojans up by one. Kieran Byrnes gave the Trojans a bit of a cushion with his unassisted goal with 2:42 left in the quarter but the Indians tied it up again as the first quarter was coming to an end. The Indians would score first in the second quarter for a 4-3 lead but as the ping pong match of scoring continued, GC's Brendan McLaughlin was able to find the back of the net, off another McCullough assist, to even it up at 4-4. It took the Trojans just over a minute to take a 7-4 lead as the Byrnes brothers (first Kieran, then two goals from Liam) scored. Not to be outdone, the Indians scored three goals in the next two minutes and, once again, the score was tied, this time at 7-7 as the second quarter came to an end. The third quarter was the only quarter to end with either team in the lead, and that 9-8 lead belonged to Manhasset. This was a hard hitting, physical game that featured powerful offenses and possession was key. Kyle Brattan and Brendan McLaughlin held their own on faceoffs. While Trojans' goalie Danny Dolan made five first half saves, GC defenders (Pat Finneran, Matt Borges, Conor Byrnes, and Matt Greene) were instrumental in helping to disrupt the Manhasset attack. GC middies Connor Riedell, Kyle Brattan Mike Collins, and Kyle Harder gained possession of a number of loose balls to give the Trojans' offense opportunities. It took 8 1/2 minutes of back and forth play in the fourth quarter before Garden City's Ryan Blair went through three Manhasset defenders to take a point blank shot and score for the Trojans making it 9-9 with 3:35 left. As time was winding down, and with the Indians defense in possession of the ball Byrnes (Liam, that is) caused Manhasset to lose the ball out of bounds, giving GC another possession. The Trojans couldn't score and the game went into overtime. Kyle Brattan won the OT faceoff and controlled the ball for GC, from there, Kieran Byrnes made his way through the Indians defense and took the game winning shot, giving the Trojans the 10-9 victory. Total scoring for GC:Kyle Brattan (1 goal), Connor McCullough (1 goal, 4 assists) Kieran Byrnes (4 goals), Brendan McLaughlin (1 goal), Liam Byrnes (2 goals, 3 assists), Ryan Blair (1 goal). Danny Dolan made six saves in goal.
