Nassau County Conference II high school football game between the No. 1 Carey Seahawks and the No. 2 Garden City Trojans at Hofstra University's Shuart Stadium on Friday evening November 22nd. The Seahawks have outscored opponents 416-45 including the regular season and playoffs. Their closest game was the 28-0 defeat they handed the Trojans who were the defending Class II champions.Carey got on the board first, the Trojans tied it up and then the Seahawks took a 14-7 halftime lead.
The Trojans took a 16-14 lead on a 27-yard field goal by Gerard Smith that capped a 10-play, 62-yard drive that consumed 3:12. This was the first time all season that Carey faced a deficit. The Trojans' drive was highlighted by the marvelous ability and versatility of Garden City quarterback Brett Stewart. He ran for gains of 13, 17 and 18 yards on the drive and completed an 8-yard pass.
With 5:15 left in the game, and trailing by two points, Carey QB Ray Catapano scrambled out of the pocket and launched a precise pass to Dylan DeMeo for a 36-yard touchdown which proved to be the game winner as Carey went on to win the game 20-16. It had been 35 years since Carey had brought home the Nassau championship and if the Trojans have it their way, they will make sure that the trophy finds its way back to Garden City in 2014.
